What type of reader am I?

I am an avid reader, however this was not always the case for me.  When I was in middle and high school, I was given very little choice in what I read.  I specifically remember checking out the same book, numerous times, from my middle school library.  What book was it?  It was a biography of Marian Anderson, an African American singer who broke racial barriers when she was allowed to sing at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.  Why did I check this book out so many times?  The answer to that question is easy...no one was encouraging me to read, so I had no idea what types of books were even available in our school library, much less any clue as to what types of books I liked.

Today that is not the case for me.  Now, I always have a book with me.  It may be a print book or it may be on my iPad or phone, but irregardless of the format, I always have something to read.  Why?  I never know when I might have a few free minutes to indulge in my passion for books.

Now, I know what I like to read and what I can read, but do not typically enjoy.  I love mysteries!!!!  My favorite mysteries are The Ghost of Graylock by Dan Poblocki, Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan, and Silent to the Bone by E.L. Konigsburg.  I also like historical fiction, especially those books that are set during the World War II era.  One of my most recent reads from this genre was Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz.  I also enjoyed Hitch by Jeanette Ingold and Eyes of the Emperor by Graham Salisbury.  Last but certainly not least, I like realistic fiction.  Some of my all time favorites are Battle of Jericho and Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper, Saving Sky by Diane Stanley, The Juvie Three by Gordon Korman, and Shift by Jennifer Bradbury.  Recently, I have read Better off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg, Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan, and The Crossover by Kwame Alexander.

Can you tell what I don't like to read?  I am not a big fan of nonfiction.  I prefer a story as opposed to factual information.  However, I did recently read Call of the Klondike by David Meissner and Kim Richardson and Sea Turtle Scientist by Stephen R. Swinburne.  Even thought this is not a typical book choice for me, I did enjoy both books.

Currently I am reading Lawless by Jeffery Salane and The Book Whisperer:  Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child by Donalyn Miller.
